Boy on a Tennis Court

Classes Begin September 6th!

Structure

Cyclone Tennis Academy offers a comprehensive program for students to develop their tennis skills at Casady School! A 10-week program, students will grow in structured biweekly practice sessions for the first 4 weeks, and then transition to performing in a positive, encouraging, once a week 6-week team league.  A single practice session per week will continue once the league has begun.  No experience required.  Higher-level players will be encouraged to participate in local USTA tournaments.  The program will be developed and overseen by USPTA certified Coach Popejoy with 25+ years experience in junior tennis.

Right Size Equipment

Cyclone Tennis Academy conducts practices and play opportunities using USTA approved equipment

  1. Court Sizes:

    • Yellow Ball (Standard Tennis Ball): standard tennis court, which is 78 feet long.

    • Green Ball: standard tennis court, 78 feet long.

    • Orange Ball: smaller court, 60 feet long. This is part of the progression for younger players learning the game.

    • Red Ball: Used on the smallest court, which is 36 feet long. This is usually for the youngest players starting out in tennis.

  2. Compression of Tennis Balls:

    • Tennis balls come in different compressions, which affects their bounce and playability.

    • The standard yellow tennis ball is typically a regular or high compression ball, suitable for standard tennis courts.

    • The green tennis ball, at factory, is 75% the compression of a standard yellow tennis ball.

    • For smaller courts like orange, and red courts, tennis balls with lower compression are used. These balls are designed to bounce lower and slower, making it easier for younger or less experienced players to play the game effectively.

Kids Playing Tug of War

Note from the Director...

Our structured tennis program at CTA addresses a critical challenge facing young athletes: the seamless transition from skill development to competitive play. Unlike traditional tennis program setups where practice often remains disconnected from actual gameplay, akin to basketball practices without any games, our approach integrates both skill refinement and competitive engagement. By fostering a team-based competitive environment, similar to soccer or basketball, we ensure that kids not only improve their individual tennis abilities but also learn the dynamics of team play. This structure not only enhances their tennis skills but also promotes essential values like teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie among peers. At CTA, we believe that experiencing competition as part of a team enhances motivation, fosters lasting enthusiasm for tennis, and prepares young players for broader sporting challenges ahead.
